Clinical Issues
The assessment and treatment of a person with a cognitive disability is an ongoing process, whether the disability is a result of complications at birth, developmental disabilities, acquired brain injury, illness, disease or stroke, or Alzheimer’s or dementia experienced as part of the natural aging process. Establishing a viable treatment plan and realistic goals requires the expertise of a number of medical and occupational professionals in order to promote healing and to ensure that the individual can attain the highest quality of life possible. A holistic approach may include medical intervention, medication, and physical, psychiatric, speech and language, and occupational therapy. In addition, an individual may benefit from Life Skills training and/or job coaching. The treatment plan should be reexamined often over the individual’s lifetime as goals are reached and needs change.
